Fine Japanese Kimono

PRE WWII MONTSUKI WITH FREE HAND YUZEN FLOWERS AND MON

The silk for this formal kimono is lightweight. The hem is ornately painted in rich colors. The motif features cranes, pine boughs, peonies and chrysanthemums. The design is augmented by embroidery. The monsuki is recognized by its hems mirror image design. It is a traditional wedding gown of the Taisho era. After the wedding the monsukis sleeves were shortened. Then the altered gown became a tomesode and could be worn for formal dress occasions. The family crest is ivy motif. Ivy is associated with power and authority. Geisha love this crest. The way ivy twines around other plants and grows thick was said to symbolize the way these women depended on their regular customers and never left them. The tomesode is fully lined. The bodice is lined in scarlet silk and the hem is self lined. It is in remarkable condition for its age. 48 x 57 sleeves 21
