CHIRIMEN SILK KIMONO WITH BUTTERFLIES AND SEVEN GRASSES OF AUTUMN IN BINGATA STYLE

This beautiful kimono is made of Chirimen silk. This is a kind of crepe silk. The pattern was applied by way of stencil. The bold coloration and composition reminds us of bingata. The coloration and composition of bingata is unique to Okinawa Japan. The design frequently uses primary colors. Its pattern is presented in a simple clear line that is often illustrated in many colors. The Seven Grasses of autumn is a favorite motif. It include bush clover, pampas grass, arrowroot, bellflower, chrysanthemum and morning glory. Other plants have been added or substituted through the years but these are the traditional ones. Each grass has its own symbolic association but collectively they are associated with a love of nature and refined taste. The kimono is fully lined. The bodice is lined in off white silk and the hem is lined in white bokashi silk. Bokashi is a technique of dip dyeing the inside hem of a kimono. The white lining begins to change color about 5 inches above the hem. The lining has some light stains that do not show on the outer garment. The kimono is in good condition. .
