TAISHO ERA MURASAKI MONTSUKI WITH HAND PAINTED YUZEN HO-O BIRDS AND TRIPLE IVY MON

The silk for this formal kimono is lightweight crepe. The murasaki (purple) silk is decorated in a pattern of large Ho-o birds. The elaborate decoration on the hem is presented in yuzen. The Ho-o birds crest is decorated in gold lacquered thread embroidery. The hem is ornately painted in rich colors, the shading is exquisite. The monsuki is a traditional wedding gown of the era. After the wedding the monsuki’s sleeves were shortened. Then the altered gown became a tomesode and could be worn after the wedding. It was however reserved for formal dress occasions only. The family crest is a trisected ivy motif. The montsuki/tomesode is fully lined. The bodice is lined in scarlet silk and the hem is self lined. It is in remarkable condition. 49 x 59 sleeves 25
