Fine Japanese Kimono

PRE WW II MONTSUKI WITH FREE HAND YUZEN CRANES, PINES AND SARASA AND SURIHAKU

The silk for this formal kimono is medium weight. The hem is ornately painted in a motif of cranes and pine boughs in a sarasa setting. Sarasa is a beautiful abstract pattern that was imported form India. It has been popular in Japanese textile design for hundreds of years. It has hundreds of variations but is characterized by its saw tooth edged designs and its use of madras red and other strong colors. The entire design has been accented with gold leaf paint. This technique is called surihaku. The montsuki is recognized by the mirror image on the skirt. The design is modified and presented on the under skirt as well. This formal black silk kimono was a traditional wedding gown. Typically the sleeves were shortened after the wedding. The shorter sleeve made the kimono a tomesode. The gown has five family crests in the wisteria motif. The montsuki is fully lined in white silk. The tomesode has some stains but the pattern hides them well. 48 x 57
