ANTIQUE (circa 1920) MURASAKI (PURPLE) RINZU MONKS ROBE

The silk for this robe is a damask pattern of large peonies, karakusa and rhinoceros horns. These are symbols of good fortune and abundance. The silk is a elegant purple and it shimmers in rich damask coloration. The robe is fully lined and the lining is a white damask pattern. The skirt is pleated allowing for an easy stride while walking. The silk is soft and has the luxurious feel characteristic of antique silk. The style for this monk’s robe has not change since it was introduced by the Zen sect; the same costume can be seen on the streets today. We think this garment dates from the 1920’s. It gives evidence of having been repaired at the sleeve opening. Also its has some worn areas in the lining. The robe has some tiny pin point holes on the shoulder. These would not show if the robe were used for display. The lining has some light stains but robe is in good condition. Robe Dimensions: 66” Wide X 45” Long with sleeves 23” wide X 31”Long
